Day 1: Iconic Landmarks
✅ You can plan to do Day 1 of Rio 5-Day Itinerary by yourself or with an organized tour.
Start your first day in Rio by visiting all the classic attractions of this city.
It is going to be a long day. So, you can book this tour to plan it efficiently, without worrying about organizing the logistics and transportation.
Or, if you are up for it, you can also DIY as a self-guided tour of the major sights.
Read on for details of both the options, guided and self-guided.
Attractions to Visit
✨ Christ the Redeemer: One of the New 7 Wonders of the World. According to us, the experience is a bit underwhelming, and visitors often wonder why this is a Wonder of the World. But, check that off your list of 7 Wonders of the World.
Compared to the site itself, we personally like the view of Christ the Redeemer on top of the Corcovado Mountain from different vantage points in the city. The sight is majestic!
✨ Sugarloaf Mountain: A classic point on Rio’s iconic landscape, and our favorite.
✨ Metropolitan Cathedral: Unique structure inspired by Mayan pyramids, and impressive architecture with use of stained glasses and marble floors.
✨ Selaron Steps: A busy but interesting landmark. Flights of stairs with colorful mosaic artwork on tiles, created by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón as his tribute to the people of Brazil.

Option 1: Go on a Guided Tour
Book this full-day tour that includes transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, services of a bilingual guide, a buffet lunch, and entry tickets to all attractions, wherever applicable.
Option 2: DIY Self-Guided Tour

How to Plan the Day (Self-Guided)
Morning
🚇 For going to Confeitaria Colombo, take the Metro (subway) and get off at the Carioca station. From here, it’s a few minutes walk to the coffee shop.
🚶🏽After having breakfast at Confeitaria Colombo, walk to the Royal Portuguese Reading Room. It will take about 6 minutes. On Google Maps, the library is marked is marked as Real Gabinete Português de Leitura.
🚋 From the library, go to the station to board the Santa Teresa tram. You can get there either by walking (12 minutes) or by Uber (5 minutes).
✔️ On Day 1, if you had explored by yourself and did not go on this full-day guided tour, then on Day 2, on the way to the tram station, visit the Metropolitan Cathedral.
🎟️ The tram ticket price gets you a roundtrip journey, but we recommend you to get off the tram before completing the full trip.
✅ Be on the train for the complete onward journey. On the way back, disembark at Largo dos Guimarães station for exploring Santa Teresa.

Afternoon
🎨 Explore this beautiful bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa on foot.
Visit art galleries, shop at boutique shops, enjoy city views, dine at a nice restaurant, admire the street art at every corner, and may be, enjoy a late afternoon coffee or some happy hour drinks.
🔖 Read our guide on Things to Do in Santa Teresa
🍖 After spending the afternoon in Santa Teresa, by evening, head to the Arcos da Lapa, an old aqueduct and a prominent landmark in Lapa.

🚙 If it gets dark, call Uber. Else enjoy the walk. While walking, make sure not to wander off in deserted alleys with no people.
✔️ On Day 1, if you had explored by yourself and did not go on this full-day guided tour, then on Day 2, during your Santa Teresa walk, visit the Selarón Steps.
Night
🥁 Enjoy the street food scene of Lapa and then walk around to go find a Samba Club for grooving in to the night.
If it’s your first time in Lapa, we suggest going to a club that charges a cover fee. In our personal opinions, a cover charge can filter the crowd.
❗️Do NOT accept drinks from strangers.
🚙 After the night out, call an Uber to get back to your place of stay.
📲 Use your phone to call the Uber from inside the bar and head out only when your ride arrives at the doorstep.

Day 3: History and Heritage
✅ For this Day 3 of Rio 5-Day Itinerary, go for a guided tour in the morning and enjoy the evening by yourself.
Experiences
✨ Little Africa Tour: A culturally immersive tour introducing you to a less talked about, but an essential aspect of Brazilian history: the African influence in shaping Brazil’s cultural identity.
This tour is our top favorite thing to do in Rio de Janeiro.
Note that, this is NOT a tour where you visit the city’s top sights of attractions.
Instead, here the guide
✔️ talks about the complexities of Rio’s socio-economic fabric in the context of its constantly evolving history and politics, from the 16th century up until the modern day, and
✔️ encourages the tour participants to ask difficult questions and engage in thought-provoking discussions.
🔖 Read this: What to Expect from the Little Africa Tour
❗️An Important Note: A common activity on many Rio itineraries is the Favela Tour, that is, going on a guided walking tour of neighborhoods where the living conditions are not optimal.
We, Pubali and Indranil, have our own reservations against going on tours like the ones of Favela Tour in Rio.
💬 So, at the end of our Little Africa Tour, we spoke at length with our guide (who himself is from a Favela), for trying to understand the nuances of doing vs. not doing such tours.
Of course, the answer is not so straightforward. This is what we concluded:
✅ For a cultural immersion activity in Rio, we would choose again and recommend the Little Africa Tour, and NOT a Favela Tour.

✨ Afro-Brazilian Cuisine: While you are in the area, after the tour, eat your meal at one of the restaurants here and try dishes from Afro-Brazilian culinary heritage.
Our guide recommended Dois de Fevereiro restaurant. We loved the outdoor seating, the girl who served us was cheerful, and we relished the foods and drinks we tried.
Indranil ordered a Moqueca de Peixe and I got a Bobó de Camarão. For drinks, we had Mamata, a special cocktail made of cachaça, passionfruit and ginger.
✨ Murals and Museum: Hang out on your own and visit some other attractions in the area, like Mural das Etnias, the largest graffiti in the world, and the Museum of Tomorrow, a museum exploring the future of science and innovation.
✨ Samba Nights: If you are confident about navigating crowds at street parties late at night in Rio, then go back to Pedra do Sal for a night of live samba music and dance, on the streets, with hundreds of other people.
🗓️ Pedra do Sal comes alive especially on Mondays and Fridays. You can as well visit on other days of the week.

How to Plan the Day (Guided + Self-Guided)
Book the Little Africa tour in advance.
Do not worry about last minute change in plans as you get the option of free cancellation for up to 24 hours in advance before the tour start time.
🍳 Tip: Feed yourself a heavy breakfast before leaving for the tour as, due to the conversation heavy nature of the tour, it often ends later than scheduled.
Show up for the Little Africa tour about 10-15 minutes prior to the scheduled time so that you get some time to settle in.
📍 The meeting point for this tour, Rio Art Museum, is a bit further away from the best areas we recommend for staying in Rio. So, account for time accordingly.
🚙 How to Reach: Get an Uber or take the Metro till Uruguaiana station and walk for about 15 minutes from there.
After the tour, have your meal at one of the restaurants in the hood and then, you have the evening to yourself (ideas in the previous section).
⚠️ If returning at night, do not walk alone on empty streets. Call an Uber and/or get the Metro to get back to your hotel.
Day 4: Beach Bliss
✅ This Day 4 of Rio 5-Day Itinerary is best enjoyed exploring by yourself.
Dedicate Day 4 on your Rio de Janeiro itinerary for some beach relaxation. Pick from the several gorgeous beaches in the South Zone of the city.
Which Beaches to Visit
Copacabana Beach is the most famous one, often considered as one of the best beaches in the world.
Our personal pick is Ipanema Beach.
Another nice option is the Leblon Beach, located right after the Ipanema Beach.
Here’s our idea: If you have the whole day for the beach, why not visit all of the three beaches, or at least two of them?
🌊 Remember that these are popular beaches, both among residents and visitors, and Rio is a big city with millions of residents.
So, do not expect seclusion and tranquility at the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. Instead, enjoy what they have to offer.
✔️ The beaches in Rio are a whole different vibe. Come with an open mind and discover it for yourself.

How to Plan the Day (Self-Guided)
⛱️ Set up camp at the beach with your beach blankets and snacks and drinks. You can also find beach chairs and umbrellas for rent.
🌊 Go for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean.
🍹 Get small and large bites to eat from the beach shacks, savor local snacks from the beach vendors, and sip on Brazil’s national drink, caipirinhas.
🔍 You are in Rio de Janeiro, at one of the most sought after beaches, where people from around the world come visit. So, one of our favorite things to do at such places is people-watching. What about you?
🏖️ Just before the golden hour rolls in, walk along the Arpoador Beach, and then to the corner to go to the Arpoador Rock.
🌅 Get a bowl or a cup of açai from a beach vendor, grab a spot and enjoy a nice beach sunset from Arpoadar.
🍽️ After the day of sun, sea and sand, why not treat yourself to a nice dinner to conclude your Day 4 in Rio?
📍 Make a prior reservation at Churrascaria Palace in Copacabana.
🥩 It is one of the finest steakhouses in Rio serving quality Brazilian meat cuts in an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Day 5: Nature OR Soccer
✅ You can plan to do Day 5 of Rio 5-Day Itinerary by yourself or with an organized tour.
For your last day on your Rio de Janeiro itinerary, we will give you two options. Pick the one that interests you more – nature or football (soccer)?
❓ Soccer or Nature? If that is a tough question to answer, the solution is simple. Plan to stay for one more night in Rio! 😃
Attractions and Experiences
✨ Tijuca National Park: Located right in the city of Rio, this is the world’s largest urban rainforest. Go on this guided tour and make the most out of your day, visiting caves and waterfalls, hiking on jungle trails, and getting the chance to spot wildlife in their natural habitat.
✨ Maracana Stadium: One of the best football (soccer) stadiums in the world, Maracana was the venue of 2 FIFA World Cup finals and 1 Olympic Games.
Now there are two ways to experience the Maracana Stadium.
Option 1: If you are a football buff, you would want to go for the Maracana Stadium Tour.
On this stadium tour, you get to see up close artifacts representing historic moments of the game, check out the players’ locker rooms, walk through the players tunnel to get to the field.
Option 2: If you are a soccer fan, watching a match at the Maracana Stadium is probably a bucket list experience for you.
Even if you are not a football fan, consider watching a game at Maracana to feel the electrifying atmosphere at the stadium, a true Carioca experience on your Rio itinerary.
How to Plan the Day
🌳 For Tijuca National Park, book this guided tour that includes roundtrip transportation, services of a guide and the park entrance fees.

Best Time to Visit Rio de Janeiro
The best time to visit Rio, on paper, is between the summer months of December and March, when the sun is shining, the weather is warm, and the city is in celebration mode for the big festivals like New Year’s Eve and Carnival.
But let us spill some beans to help you make a more informed decision:
🌦️ Rio’s rainy season coincides with its summer, that is, December to March.
But that isn’t so bothering because you will still get plenty of sunshine. Just remember to pack a raincoat.
🎉 Carnival and New Year’s Eve are two occasions when millions of people from around the world visit Rio.
So, if visiting during these periods, expect to pay exorbitant prices for accommodation, encounter massive crowds for activities, and compromise on quality for food and drinks.
✅ November and April are shoulder seasons, when you still get the best of warm sunny days and enjoy the activities, but with lesser crowds.
🗓️ Other times of the year, from May to October, when the temperatures are lower, are also fine for visiting Rio.
Basically, there is no wrong time to visit Rio de Janeiro. Just pack for the season and you are ready for your Rio itinerary!

Rio Carnival
Rio Carnival is considered one of the best festivals not just in Brazil or Latin America, but in the whole wide world.
🎉 From our personal experience, we can tell you that Rio Carnival is a spectacular festival to experience.
But let us also warn you that, compared to a non-festive (not Carnival, not NYE) time of the year, visiting Rio during Carnival is a completely different experience, and even overwhelming for some.
So, you need to make a tough choice – whether to visit Rio during Carnival or another time of the year?
If you ask us to help you decide, here’s our recommendation:
🥁 If your main goal is to witness the biggest party in the world that is also representative of Brazil’s cultural identity, go for Rio Carnival.
If you take your first trip to Rio during Carnival, please prepare yourself with how to stay safe during Rio Carnival.
🏖️ To truly experience Rio de Janeiro without the repercussions of a huge event, take your first trip to the marvelous city, NOT during Carnival.
