If you are in Antigua Guatemala, there is a high chance your itinerary starts orbiting around two names: Acatenango and Pacaya. While planning your trip, you might wonder whether to hike Acatenango or Pacaya from Antigua, Guatemala, or may be, do both?
Acatenango and Pacaya, both are iconic volcano hikes. Both are guided adventure hikes that offer volcanic landscapes, proximity to active volcanoes and breathtaking views.
But they are very different experiences. We have done both.
Acatenango overnight hike is the tougher, bucket-list one where you camp high up and watch the Fuego volcano erupt all night.
Pacaya hike is the half day tour with dramatic lava fields, volcano views, and the fun marshmallow roasting inside naturally heated lava vents.
In this Pacaya versus Acatenango hiking guide, we compare the hikes in the most practical way so you can choose confidently, whether you have one day in Antigua or a full week.

Pacaya Volcano Hike: Our Experience
We did Pacaya as an afternoon tour and it was exactly what we wanted: a volcano experience that was fun and easy half day tour from Antigua.
Pacaya Hike Logistics: What Happened for Us
- Pickup from Antigua was exactly at 2 PM
- Drive was about 1.5 hours through small towns and farmland
- At the park entrance, we paid the entrance fee in cash (100Q) and used the restroom (none on the trail)
- We grabbed wooden hiking sticks from vendors (10Q) which helped on the loose descent
Pacaya Trail Conditions: What It Felt Like
Pacaya is not technical, but it can surprise people because the volcanic soil is loose. The steep sections are not long, but traction can be the challenge.
Our highlights:
- The first viewpoints come quickly, and seeing Agua, Acatenango and Fuego early was a great payoff
- The climb got steeper in the second half and the loose dirt made each step feel slightly harder
- We were offered horse rides multiple times (optional, extra cost), but we just politely declined

The Highest Point of the Pacaya Trail
The views from the top are amazing. The highest point is at 2297 meters and we reached there after the 1 hour hike.
You can see the Pacaya volcano summit on one side and the other three volcanoes, Agua, Acatenango and Fuego as well on the other side in the distance.
The Fun Part: Lava Field Marshmallows
The lava field stop is the fun part on the descent trail on Pacaya hike. The initial part of descent is slightly tricky as you walk on loose gravel. But, the lava field is on a flat part, where we could relax. We warmed the marshmallows provided by our guides inside the holes between the naturally heated rocks!
Standing there, holding marshmallows over heat coming from the ground makes it feel like you are truly on an active volcanic landscape.

Sunset Views and Departure
After that, we continued to a sunset viewpoint. We were lucky to be on a clear day and watched the sun disappear as the orange light made the eruption from Fuego more dramatic.
After some more descent, we boarded the vehicle and returned to Antigua by early evening, just in time for dinner.

Acatenango Volcano Overnight Hike: Our Experience
Acatenango was a different experience. It required commitment, both mentally and physically.
Acatenango Hike Logistics: What Happened for Us
- Pickup from Antigua: We were picked up in the morning from our Antigua accommodation and met the group at the tour office for a quick briefing.
- Gear check + rentals: We used this time to confirm what was included and to rent some essentials. We rented poles and headlamp since we were not carrying those. Read our complete packing guide for the Acatenango Volcano hike.
- Walk to the trailhead, it was a short walk.
- Start hiking + pacing: Guides set a steady pace with regular breaks. We found it helpful to eat and drink early, not just when we felt tired.
- Entrance fees: We handled the park entry process (100Q in cash) after crossing the farmlands and initial flight of stairs.
- Base camp arrival: We reached camp late afternoon. This is where the temperature dropped quickly and layers became essential.
- Night at camp: Campfire, hot beverages and snacks followed by dinner while we spent the evening watching Fuego eruptions from camp before turning in.
- Early start next day: We had an early wake-up for the sunrise summit push, then returned to camp for breakfast and began the descent.

What Made Acatenango Feel Harder than Expected
- The uphill is consistent and there are not much flat portion on the trail.
- Altitude and constant change of weather added to the difficulty, even if you are fit.
- The loose volcanic soil in steeper sections require additional effort.
- Nights can be very cold, and sleeping in a tent is part of the deal.
What Made Acatenango Worh It
For us, the reward was watching Volcan de Fuego erupt through the night. It is not a quick viewpoint moment. It is hours of anticipation, rumbling and glowing eruptions in the dark. That is the reason people call Acatenango the best volcano hike from Antigua.
We could watch the eruptions for hours, while our guides provided snacks, hot beverages and dinner. So we relaxed, had some delicious food and watched the volcano show.

Trail Reality on Acatenango
The uphill hike, the first day is strenuous. It is a 6-hour long hike where you experience change in vegetation, weather, temperature and trail conditions.
The trail went from walking between farmlands, muddy stairs, hard-soil and loose volcanic soil trail closer to the base camp. When we reached our basecamp, as we had the first glimpse of the Fuego erupting in the sunset light, we felt the sense of achievement.

- You sleep cold and wake early for the summit
- It is physically demanding and can leave you sore
How to Plan Your Antigua Itinerary to Do Both Hikes: Pacaya and Acatenango
If you want to do both and still enjoy Antigua, keep at least 4 days considering some gap in between the 2 hikes.
Here is a sample itinerary to plan your days with the 2 hikes:
| Day | Activities |
|---|---|
| 1 | Morning: Explore town, Afternoon: Pacaya Sunset Tour |
| 2 | Relaxed day in Antigua: ruins, markets, cafes |
| 3-4 | Acatenango Overnight Hike |
