Do You Need to Buy Costa Rica Rental Car Insurance If You Have Credit Card Coverage?

You probably have a home country credit card that offers insurance on rental cars. Does that suffice when renting a car in Costa Rica? Well, not entirely.

❗️ Even if your credit card includes rental car insurance, you need to purchase the mandatory third-party insurance (Adobe’s Liability Protection) when renting a car in Costa Rica. It is not possible to remove it from the cart.

However, with your credit card’s insurance coverage, what you can opt out of is the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), that is, Adobe’s Car Protection coverage.

Let us reiterate that, if you are planning to use your credit card coverage to decline the CDW/ Car Protection coverage, you need to produce a written letter from your credit card issuer company that your plan includes vehicle damage coverage for rental car in Costa Rica.

Note that, your credit card insurance for rental car in Costa Rica covers damages to the rental car only, and not third party damages or liability claims against you.

Steps to Use Credit Card Coverage

📞 Confirm with your card issuer: Call your provider and confirm if they offer coverage for rental cars in Costa Rica.

💳 Decline rental company insurance: Opt out of Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)/ Adobe’s Car Protection, if your card covers this, but remember you’ll still need to pay for mandatory third-party insurance.

📩 Bring documentation: Rental companies may require proof of credit card coverage. Bring a letter issued by your credit card provider confirming their coverage for rental car in Costa Rica.

Our Recommendation

* Example used for Adobe Rent A Car

Your credit card insurance coverage for rental car in Costa Rica comes with certain limitations.

For example, with this option, in the case of an incident and claim filing, you will need to pay from your own pocket for 100% of all repair costs and related fees, and also, handle all the paperwork yourself to file the claim.

So, what should you do – purchase or decline Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)/ Adobe’s Car Protection coverage?

If I were you, I would not hesitate to pay a few dollars extra per day and avoid the hassle of handling repair costs and claims processing in the unwanted event of an incident while vacationing in a foreign country.
