In the tourist areas, there is a higher chance to find a store attendant who speaks English, in case you do not speak Portuguese.
✅ If you do not have a Brazilian CPF, then buy it ONLY from a brand store. Do NOT buy on the street or resellers.

Documents Required for a SIM
- If you have the Brazilian CPF (most visitors do not), then you will have more data plan options.
- For visitors, the plans are limited, and more expensive.
- Provide your identity proof. For visitors, it is passport.
- Choose and pay for the plan. Confirm the inclusions.
- There are sometimes additional benefits like unlimited Whatsapp messaging or partial YouTube or TikTok usage inclusions.
SIM card Activation
- The store attendant provides the SIM, inserts it and helps in activation right there.
- In 5 to 10 minutes, the SIM card should be activated. Check if it is working.
- Read the message from the carrier. Typically, it includes the data plan inclusions.
- Clarify any query with the attendant before leaving.
Our Experience of obtaining a local SIM card in Rio de Janeiro
🏬 We visited a Claro store in Copacabana, just searched for one on the map.
📱Activation: The Store attendant at the Claro store helped us with inserting the SIM and setting it up for us and within 5 minutes, the data was activated.
📄 Document: As a visitor, Pubali presented her passport to get the SIM. But any ID document would do, that’s what we were told.
We got our SIM from a Claro store near Copacabana. Check with store representative if they sell SIM meant for tourists.
