If you want an economical way to travel and if you have time to spare, taking the bus from Medellin to Bogota offers great value and, on daytime departures, beautiful scenery.
We took the overnight bus from Medellin to Bogota, and found it comfortable enough, slept well in our premium seats, and in the morning, woke up to beautiful mountain views.

Taking the bus from Medellin to Bogota is usually the most economical option, but it does take time, so it helps to know what to expect before you book.
Bus Duration, Route and Road Conditions
The bus journey from Medellin to Bogota typically takes between 11 to 12 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Expect some delays, especially if you are taking a day bus.
The route takes you through the scenic Andean mountains, offering beautiful views along the way, during the day.
Expect winding mountain roads before reaching Bogota, which sits at around 2600 meters above sea level.

You can take an overnight bus to avoid losing a full day to travel, and sometimes reduce the impact of traffic.
The downside is that you will miss most of the mountain scenery, which is best enjoyed on a daytime departure.

Rest Stops: The bus usually makes a couple of stops for administrative purposes. Depending on the departure time and operator, there may also be a restroom stop.
In our case, there was no restroom stop on our overnight bus, and we reached Bogota earlier than expected.

We traveled just before Christmas and school holidays, and the bus terminal was extremely busy.

You can also buy tickets directly at the terminal, each bus company has its own counter. However, during busy periods (high season, holidays, weekends), lines can be long and tickets can sell out.
If you plan to buy your ticket at the counter, arrive early and do not wait until the last hour before your preferred departure time.

Our Experience Taking the Bus From Medellin to Bogota
We took the overnight Rapido Ochoa Premium bus from Medellin to Bogota. To help you know what to expect, here is our experience of the journey.
Check-in and Boarding at Terminal del Norte (Medellin)
Our bus was scheduled to depart at night, so we reached Terminal del Norte in the evening and had a light dinner before boarding.
Terminal del Norte is a multi-level terminal with shops, restaurants, ATMs, and paid restrooms. We found it mostly clean, but seating was limited. There are a few seats near the ticket counters, plus more seating inside and around the restaurants and food kiosks.
Ticket validation: We had our ticket receipts on our phones. At one of the Rapido Ochoa counters (there were several), we showed the receipts along with a digital copy of our passports, and received paper tickets.
Security and boarding: After dinner, we went to the boarding gates. A security officer checked our tickets, and we waited near our assigned gate and platform for the bus to arrive.
It was a very busy that night, and there was a lot of crowding near the gates, so we had to move through the crowd to find a place to wait with our backpacks.
The Premium Bus: Seats, Comfort, Amenities
Overall, the bus was comfortable. It had strong air conditioning (sometimes too strong, so bring a jacket), USB charging, plenty of legroom, and an entertainment screen with a limited selection of movies.
The layout was two seats on one side and single seats on the other. Pubali and I (Indranil) booked single seats, one behind the other.
The Overnight Journey and Arrival in Bogota (Timing, Views, Weather)
The road is mountainous, but the ride felt mostly smooth and we were able to get some sleep. The views at dawn were beautiful as we moved toward Bogota.
We left Medellin in t-shirts and a light jacket and arrived to a much colder climate in Bogota. The altitude difference is noticeable too. Medellin sits at about 1495 meters, while Bogota is around 2640 meters above sea level.
Our bus did not stop for any breaks, and we arrived earlier than the scheduled time. Since it was an overnight bus, we think traffic was lighter than usual. Despite the long journey, we arrived feeling relatively rested.
The Bogota bus terminal has plenty of places to eat, including restaurants and small spots selling Colombian food, coffee and snacks.
We had time before check-in at our accommodation, so we ate breakfast at the terminal and treated ourselves to Colombian tamales and coffee.
Getting From Bogota Bus Terminal to the City
After breakfast, we booked an Uber. It picked us up from the gas station near Terminal Salitre, which was the easiest pickup point for us.
Rideshare pickups can be restricted at terminals, and the nearby gas station was the simplest meeting point.
Flying from Medellin to Bogota
Flying is the quickest way to travel between Medellin and Bogota. Choose a flight if you are short on time.
How much time does it take to fly from Medellin to Bogota (Reality Check)
The flight duration between Medellin to Bogota is roughly 1 hour. However, the total time may take between 5 to 6 hours, much shorter than the bus duration.
Here is a practical breakdown of the time:
- Medellin city to MDE Airport: ~45 to 60 min
- Arrive early for flight: ~2 hours
- Flight: ~1 hour
- BOG Airport to Bogota city: ~20 to 60 min depending on traffic
Airlines and Airports
Flights depart from Medellin’s Jose Maria Cordova International Airport (MDE), located in Rionegro, around 45 minutes from Medellin’s city center.
You will arrive at Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG), which is roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the city center, depending on traffic.
Medellin’s airport feels smaller and quicker to navigate than Bogota’s airport.
In our experience at Medellin Airport (MDE), when we flew from Medellin to Santa Marta, check-in and security were smooth and reasonably fast.
Still, we recommend arriving at Medellin Airport at least 2 hours before departure, as the lobby area can get busy depending on the time of day.
If you are flying Bogota to Medellin, we suggest arriving at Bogota Airport no less than 2 hours before your flight. Bogota is the capital and BOG is the busiest airport in Colombia, so lines at the checkpoints can get crowded.

Ticket prices can range from 30-100 USD, depending on how far in advance you book, the time of year, and how much luggage you need to carry.
This is where the bus prices really worked in our favor, given our check-in luggage needs and travel dates.
If you are traveling with larger bags, keep in mind that some budget fares look cheap at first, but the final price can increase once you add luggage.

Is it better to take a daytime bus or an overnight bus?
Choose a daytime bus if you want to enjoy the Andean scenery and do not mind arriving later in the day. Choose an overnight bus if you prefer to sleep in transit and arrive in Bogota in the morning, but keep in mind you only get to experience the views at dawn.
Do buses from Medellin to Bogota stop for bathroom breaks?
It depends on the operator and the departure time. Some services make one or more restroom stops, but overnight buses may not stop at all, so do not assume you will have a break.
