Guard Your Valuables
Taking advantage of the large congregation of people during Rio Carnival, pickpocketing and snatching become common issues.
❌ Do not carry valuables. Leave your passport, credit cards, and significant amounts of cash, back in your place of accommodation in a secure place.
✅ When you are out enjoying the festivities, carry only what you need for the day – a small amount of cash, 1 credit card and 1 phone with essential apps.
Keep these items in a secure, hard-to-access place. Use an anti-theft money belt and wear it underneath your clothing.

Protect Your Phone
Snatching and stealing of phones are particularly common in Rio de Janeiro. This, unfortunately, heightens during the Carnival.
📱 So, you NEED to be extra protective of your phone during Rio Carnival.
Here are some dos and don’ts. We received some of these advices from locals in Rio, some we already knew about, and some others, we learnt the hard way!
📱 If you are traveling with a companion, take only 1 phone between the two of you.
💳 Use an anti-theft money belt and wear it underneath your clothing.
🤳🏽 When you need to use the phone, step away from the crowd and watch your surroundings before taking the phone out of your money belt.
🚦 Do not stand on the pavement close to the road with flow of traffic.
🗑️ Some people recommend using a burner phone for Rio Carnival.
📞 If you do use a burner phone, make sure it has all the essential apps like Uber, Google Maps, WhatsApp.

Stay with the Crowd
We love exploring places on our own, often venturing into little known and less frequented spots, just to absorb the place and see local life go by. If you are the same, we can feel your temptation.
❌ But Rio during Carnival is NOT for wandering in to the city’s hidden corners.
✅ Staying with the main crowds is safer. For Carnival party spots, go to the places vouched by locals and fellow travelers.
🌃 Avoid desolate areas, particularly after dark. If, for some reason, you feel lost, try not to look nervous, and navigate your way to the nearest well-lit populated spot.
Even if you are in the city for Carnival, do not miss seeing some of the major attractions of Rio de Janeiro, like Christ the Redeemer and the Sugarloaf Mountain. They are popular and always frequented by visitors from around the world.
Avoid Being in the Middle of Overcrowded Parties
While we tell you to stay with the crowds, we also tell you – do not get lost in the middle of overcrowded parties, especially if you have your phone on you.
We understand that it may be exciting to be right in the middle of the action. But if this is your first time at Rio Carnival, it may be wise to prioritize safety over fun.
🥳 Neighborhood street parties for Carnival are called Blocos. They can range in size from small to medium to huge, the last one known as Megablocos.
By all means, do go to multiple bloco parties and feel how it is like to experience Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, but practice caution. Here are some rough guidelines to balance fun and safety:
✅ For your first Rio Carnival bloco party, choose a smaller neighborhood Bloco over Megabloco.
✅ Once you get a hang of how Blocos work, then head to a Megabloco, although it is not mandatory.
❌ At Megablocos, ideal is NOT to carry your phone. If you do, do not walk in to the middle of the crowds.
✅ Experience the Megablocos from the sidelines, staying right next to the party but not inside it. You will also get a good view of the huge gathering.

Stay Hydrated and Be Mindful of Alcohol
Rio’s sultry weather, the exhilaration of Carnival and the constant flow of alcohol create the perfect recipe for dehydration.
Do not let dehydration play fowl with your Carnival fun in Rio. Take regular breaks in the shade when you can.
💦 Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Use a refillable water filter bottle.
If you are consuming alcohol:
✅ Pace yourself and monitor your alcohol intake.
❌ Do not get wasted and expose yourself to crimes of opportunity.
❌ Do not accept drinks (or food) from strangers and prevent unfortunate incidents like drink spiking.
Use Reliable Transportation
The public transport network of Rio de Janeiro is excellent and easy to access.
From all the options available, we recommend using Metro and Uber.
🚇 Metro: Well-connected across multiple lines, frequent and regular schedule, fixed price, not affected by traffic.
✅ Metro in Rio de Janeiro runs 24/7 during Carnival.
🚗 Uber: Easy, convenient, affordable and value for money. Susceptible to traffic.
📲 If you are traveling solo, share your Uber ride tracking with someone you trust.
Choose Your Street Food Wisely
There are several street food establishments all over Rio, and during Carnival, you will also find many street vendors selling snacks and savories.
🧑🏽🍳 To avoid foodborne illnesses, choose vendors who follow good hygiene practices.

Rio de Janeiro is no exception.
Now, not just in Rio, but for our general well-being while traveling, this is how we select our street food, and we suggest you to do the same for Rio Carnival.
✅ Opt for busy stalls where you can see food being freshly prepared.
❌ Avoid raw or undercooked items.
⚠️ Avoid dairy-heavy items that may get spoiled in the heat.

Travel in Groups
If you are traveling as a couple or a family or a group of friends, try to stick together during the madness of Rio Carnival.
