Oxygen Jungle Villas: A Romantic Resort in Costa Rica

Globally recognized as one of the top resorts in Costa Rica, Oxygen Jungle Villas offer a luxurious stay experience in a lush rainforest setting in a hilltop overlooking the ocean. So, if you want to whisk your partner away to the tropical paradise of Costa Rica for a romantic vacation, do consider Oxygen Jungle Villas in Uvita.

After limiting our travels to “stay at home” or at the most, day trips for more than five months, it was time for us to embrace overnight vacations once again. We are glad that we chose Oxygen Jungle Villas for this.

To help you decide before you click on “book”, we are going to describe in detail everything we liked about staying here, and what you can expect from a stay at Oxygen Jungle Villas.

What we liked about Oxygen Jungle Villas

We loved our stay at Oxygen Jungle Villas. Several factors contributed towards this satisfaction of ours about this accommodation in Uvita.

Plan your Costa Rica trip:

But before getting into the details of everything that we likes at Oxygen, you must know that there were couple of things that we did not get to try at the time of our stay.

We had read amazing reviews about the restaurant food and the spa treatments at Oxygen Jungle Villas. But both the restaurant and the spa were closed at the time of our visit in 2020, complying with the health safety protocols.

We did not face much challenge for the restaurant closure though. They had a small menu available for room service. Also, there are several good restaurants in Uvita to satiate your hunger.

But we will would definitely like to return to Oxygen Jungle Villas to try their internationally acclaimed menu.

Private Glass Villas with Excellent Views

This is a boutique luxury hotel with only 12 villas for accommodation. All villas at Oxygen have glass walls with excellent views from the room. You can choose from two different villa options, Jungle View Villas and Ocean View Villas.

All villas come with luxurious furnishings, air-conditioning, coffee maker and minibar. A four-poster king-sized bed with soft white linen takes the central focus of the glass villa. The whole setting of the villa definitely invites romance!

Each villa has an adjoining private terrace in the front. A white couch and a white coffee table on the terrace go well with the decor theme of the villa. We loved sitting on this couch, looking at the ocean and listening to the songs of birds.

Another villa design characteristic that stands out at Oxygen Jungle Villas is the bathroom layout. A big wash basin area with two big stone carved basins and a large mirror is complemented with a closet with white bathrobes. On either side of the wash basin area, you have separate cabins for toilet and shower. The transparent glass shower cabin is fitted with a rain shower tempting an indulgent hot bath. Started smelling romance again?

2023 Update: Now, some of the villas at Oxygen Jungle also come with spa tubs in the sit-out areas. These villa categories are called Ocean View Spa Villas and Jungle Spa Villas.

Whale’s Tail View

The Whale’s Tail is an iconic identity for Uvita. The ocean, the sand and the rock give rise to a unique natural formation on the beach during low tide. An aerial view of this formation makes it look like a whale’s tail. Hence the name.

There are several ways to experience the whale’s tail. You can walk on the whale’s tail during low tide. Or you can drive uphill on the other side to get a bird’s eye view of the whale’s tail.

But if you are staying at Oxygen Jungle Villas, you can see the Whale’s Tail right from the resort. You can get an angular view from the Ocean View Villas. But you will not miss the view even if you choose to stay in the Jungle View Villas. According to us, the best view of the Whale’s Tail is from the swimming pool area of the property.

Infinity Pool

The infinity pool is one of the most relaxing spots at Oxygen Jungle Villas. Looking out to the Pacific Ocean, the pool is surrounded by lush jungle on the outer periphery. On the inner periphery, ornamental Javanese stone statues add to the calming vibe of the place.

At this infinity pool, you do not just immerse yourself in water, but also in a complete jungle experience. Toucans, hummingbirds, tanagers and if you are lucky, sloths, will give you company from the nearby trees.

Relax at the infinity pool if you want to spend a laid-back day at Oxygen Jungle Villas. Even if you prefer to go out and try other activities in Uvita, you can always end the day with a cocktail and a dip in the pool, while watching a fiery sunset over the Pacific.

Breakfast with a View

How we eat our breakfast often sets the tone for the rest of the day. At Oxygen Jungle Villas, you can be sure that this tone will be set to sweet.

From the available options, we chose the continental breakfast on all days of our stay. The continental spread includes juice of the day, fresh fruits, coffee, bread, butter, passion fruit jam, hash brown and eggs to order.

The breakfast is served at the dining space near the reception. The view from here spans from the infinity pool and extends till the Pacific Ocean in the horizon. On a clear day, you can also get a view of the famous Caño Island. Remember to relish these stunning views as you gorge on your breakfast.

Waterfall Trail

Catarata Uvita is the most popular waterfall of the town. There are some other wonderful waterfalls too in the Costa Ballena area, like Nauyaca Waterfalls in Dominical and Cascada El Pavon in Ojochal, to name a few.

But how about not one, but two pretty waterfalls right on the property of your resort?

You can follow the Waterfall Trail at Oxygen Jungle Villas to reach the two natural waterfalls that are part of the property. The trail follows unpaved dirt roads through the jungle. Listen to the sound of the birds and the monkeys as you walk in the dense forest faintly pierced by sunlight.

After visiting the two waterfalls, Catarata Roca Bruja and Catarata Ananda, you can come back on the main trail and proceed on the River Pool trail. It is a small natural pool where you can relax after the hike.

The waterfalls and the natural pool in the middle of the jungle lend a sense of mystery to your romance at Oxygen Jungle Villas.

Birding and Wildlife

We were served welcome cocktails upon checking in at Oxygen. It was a rainy afternoon. As we sat by the pool, we noticed couple of yellow-throated toucans hiding from the rain in a cecropia tree nearby.

We immediately knew that the chances of sighting birds were pretty good at Oxygen Jungle Villas. But little did we know then that the sightings could be accomplished by minimal efforts, like lying in bed! True story!

Everyday we woke up to the views of toucans feeding on fruits, on trees right in front of our glass villa. Other birds also frequented during the day. At times, raccoons used our terrace area for its passage.

If you can see so much of wildlife just by staying in the room, imagine the amount of sighting opportunities when you go out and explore the trails on the property.

Staff Courtesy

Last but not the least, we need to mention the staff at Oxygen Jungle Villas. Otherwise, this would be an incomplete account of what we liked about Oxygen Jungle Villas.

We went to stay with Oxygen Jungle Villas a few days after they reopened in August post lockdown in 2020. So, as part of the new control measures post reopening, they were operating with limited staff at the time.

During our stay, Ana and Leidi were on front office duty and kitchen duty respectively post afternoon, and Bryan and Esteban during the morning hours. Each one of them made sure that the guests feel welcome and safe throughout the course of their stay.

With Bryan and Ana, our interactions were not just limited to check-in/ check-out formalities and discussing tour options like whale watching and mangrove kayaking. We discussed life, family and travel with them and felt like we are talking to our friends.

What to expect at Oxygen Jungle Villas

Although we had a perfect stay at Oxygen Jungle Villas, we would want you to be aware of a few things.

Adults Only

If you are planning for a big family trip with your kids, Oxygen Jungle Villas resort is not the place. They are an adults only boutique hotel. So it is a perfect accommodation option if you intend to get away from it all and enjoy a romantic getaway, just for the two of you.

No Television

The villas are set completely in a jungle. They have been built in a way such that they blend in and coexist with nature, not intrude. So, the only sounds you will hear are those of birds and animals, those of wind and rain. There is no television to distract you from nature here at Oxygen Jungle Villas.

No Telephone

They do not have any telephone either in the room. But when it is just the two of you in this intimate setting, there will be times when you would want to stay in and order room service, isn’t it? You need not worry. They have you covered for this. You can place your orders for room service through WhatsApp. Free WiFi is available throughout the property.

How to reach Oxygen Jungle Villas

There are 2 main routes to reach Uvita, one by the coastal highway Ruta 34, and the other one by the mountain road, Ruta 2. To know more about what to expect from each route, check this.

As you reach Uvita (from north), you have to take the left from BCR in the center of the town. After a bit this path turns into dirt and gravel. The ride is bumpy but beautiful. As you drive up the mountainous road, you can feel that you are heading towards a secluded place.

You can find Oxygen Jungle Villas on Google Maps.

You will also see prominent sign boards for Oxygen wherever there is a road intersection along the route. So it is easy to reach the destination. But we recommend a 4X4 vehicle for this ride, although it takes about ten minutes to reach the hotel from BCR.

Ours is not a 4X4, but the car has high ground clearance. It worked, but in certain areas, we felt a 4X4 would have served better.

Final Thoughts

Oxygen Jungle Villas provide you with a peaceful spot for indulging in a romantic vacation. We would definitely want to stay here again.

But you do not just celebrate romance with your partner at Oxygen. You romance the nature too, as all elements of nature seem to come together to create a perfect harmony at Oxygen Jungle Villas.

  1. I am so looking forward to traveling again. We spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica a few years ago and really liked the country and the people. We did, however, not make it as far south as Uvita. One of the reasons for that is that this part of the country is very remote and usually not connected as you state by them having no TV or phone.

    • Hope you can visit Costa Rica again Rudy. Starting Nov 1, Costa Rica is now open to visitors from all countries. Uvita may be a bit remote compared to some other more popular destinations. However, it does not lack any kind of infrastructure. Not having TV or phone at Oxygen Jungle Villas is a choice of the resort, probably to add to the already intimate stay experience there 🙂

  2. This place looks so beautiful – and immersed in Costa Rica’s fantastic nature. It is definitely one of the most beautiful and rich countries in Central America. Thank you for taking me down memory lane 😉

  3. Wow! I thought for sure those villas were going to NOT have air conditioning! The glass walls are something I haven’t seen before, I will definitely have to keep Oxygen Jungle Villas in mind when we go to Costa Rica!

  4. That pool alone makes me want to visit. And who knows – having never been to Latin America except two short walks across the Mexican border, I just might! It looks wonderful, and I heard on the news today that the first flight left Germany for Cuba since March… we hope it will soon be possible using all precautions.
