Traveling in Costa Rica for about 8 years now, having done several road trips, in our own car as well as rental cars from various providers, we have learned that having your own wheels is the best way to experience this beautiful country.
We usually get our rental cars from Adobe Rent A Car at the San Jose Airport (SJO) location, but on this occasion, we needed to rent a car in Liberia.
So, let us share with you our experience of renting a car from Adobe at Liberia Airport (LIR), so that you know what to expect for planning a Costa Rica road trip exploring Guanacaste and beyond.

Do You Need to Reserve Adobe Rental Car in Advance?
Yes. Reserve your Adobe rental car in advance to avoid last minute disappointment and limitation of choices.
For high season months of December through April, Adobe’s rental cars get booked months in advance.
For low season months of May through November, book at least a few weeks in advance to secure Adobe’s deals and green season special rates.
The reservation process is straightforward on Adobe’s website. You select dates, pick your vehicle of choice and enter your details to receive instant confirmation.
Adobe does not require a deposit to hold your reservation, though they do need a credit card on file. Upon reservation, you will receive an email to enter these details securely. Just follow the instructions.
Adobe Rental Car from Liberia Airport (LIR)
The first thing to know about renting a car from Adobe at Liberia Airport (LIR) is that their airport car rental office is NOT located inside the airport.
The office lies about 8 km (less than 5 miles) away from the airport, which is a 10 minute drive, subject to traffic.
But you need not worry about that as Adobe offers complimentary shuttle transfers from and to the airport.
Here is what to do for the transfer:
After immigration, collect your luggage, clear customs and head to the exit to find your Adobe representative holding a sign with your name. Liberia airport’s compact size should make this process simple.
The Adobe representative will check your names off his list and direct you to the shuttle. The driver can assist you with luggage loading and will drive you to the Adobe office near Liberia airport.
The Adobe shuttles are air-conditioned minivans, and in our experience, they are clean and well-maintained, and offer a comfortable ride for the quick and convenient transfer.

LIR Airport Adobe Rent A Car Office Experience
Facilities at the Adobe Office
Adobe’s Liberia airport office is modern, clean and compact. Clean restrooms, drinking water and WiFi are available at this office, helping you get comfortable after a long flight.
There are small seating areas where your travel companions can wait while you do the paperwork. You will also find a snacks vending machine in case you want to buy a little something.
On the day of our rental car pickup from Adobe’s Liberia Airport office in the month of May, with fewer customers being processed simultaneously, the atmosphere felt relaxed and personal.
Paperwork
Our paperwork at Adobe’s Liberia office was efficient and straightforward.
Upon arrival, we were greeted and directed to a check-in desk. The Adobe representative serving this desk handled our entire transaction.
He reviewed our reservation, confirmed all the details per our booking and explained us our insurance coverage. We provided our driver’s licenses, IDs and completed the payment with credit card.

We never felt rushed as the representative took the time to answer our questions thoroughly. The entire paperwork process took about 15 minutes.
Read the documents along with all T&C carefully, and take note of the phone number and the QR code in case you need to contact Adobe during the course of your road trip in Costa Rica.
We appreciate that when booking with Adobe Rent A Car, there are no hidden fees or confusing clauses, and the Adobe representatives never pressure us into buying unnecessary add-ons.
Adobe Car Rental Insurance
For renting a car in Costa Rica, you need to purchase the mandatory Liability Protection insurance.
On top of that, you should and/or can get additional coverages as described in the table below, following the terminology used by Adobe Rent A Car for rental car insurance:

We always opt for Extended Protection cover. It gives us the peace of mind, knowing Adobe will take care of everything in the unwanted case of any minor or major incident.
While it can increase the daily rate by about 20 USD, I think, the stress-free driving experience is worth every penny, even for things very small.
We know because once we hit the ramp and got scratches on the side of the car door, when leaving the Adobe SJO office, right after picking our rental car!
Payment
We used credit card to make the payment for our Adobe rental car. They accept VISA, Mastercard and AMEX.
Here are a few things that you need to note about Adobe rental car payment:
Balance Due: At the time of payment during rental car pickup, Adobe charges 10 USD lesser on your card than the total amount due. This balance amount is charged when you return the car and the transaction is formally closed.
Security Deposit: A hold of 1000 USD will be put on your credit card. Debit card or cash are not accepted. This hold will be canceled when you return the car.
Cardholder: The person renting the car needs to use their own credit card, that is, the cardholder name and the rental car customer name need to match.

Getting Our Rental Car
Vehicle Inspection
After completing the paperwork, an Adobe staff walked us to our car with an inspection form. Together, we examined the entire vehicle, noting every existing scratch, dent or imperfection.
A difference with Adobe’s San Jose Airport (SJO) office is that all rental cars for pick up at Adobe Liberia Airport (LIR) office are parked out in the open (some in shaded outdoor areas), unlike Adobe SJO’s indoor parking.
We are so glad that they had left the air-conditioning on from before our pickup time, otherwise the inside of the car would have felt like a furnace in that scorching afternoon heat of Guanacaste.
We took the time to review all the small details. Here is a list of things we usually check before driving off:
- Exterior condition: body, windows, lights
- Tire condition and spare tire
- Interior features and cleanliness
- Fuel level (full tank)
- Basic functions (AC, lights, wipers)
For additional documentation, we also take photos and videos of the rental car from all angles. Although the Extended Protection covers us for any damage, I feel there is no harm in sparing an extra minute for this extra check.
Vehicle Type
We rented the car from Adobe at Liberia Airport (LIR) office for exploring Playa del Coco, Tamarindo and a hot springs property in Rincon de la Vieja.
For these regions of Guanacaste, a simple sedan would suffice. So we rented a Hyundai Grand i10 which worked nice and perfect for our needs on that trip.
The white car was spotlessly clean inside and out, smelled nice and fresh inside, and the air-conditioning worked well.
When you reserved your rental car online in advance, you must have selected which vehicle you wished to rent. Please note, at the time of pickup, you will either get the exact same car, or a similar one belonging to the same category.

Costa Rica Road Trip Starting from Liberia Airport: What to Expect
Hitting the Road from LIR
Leaving the Adobe Liberia Airport (LIR) office, we found ourselves on well-paved roads with clear signage. The immediate area around Liberia Airport is easy to navigate, with a main highway (Ruta 21) providing direct access to popular destinations. The roads here are wide and less chaotic, making for a gentle introduction to driving in Costa Rica.
We were on our way to Playa del Coco, and the short and straightforward drive took us through scenic countryside with fairly good roads the entire way.
In about 3.3 km (~2 miles) of driving from Adobe Liberia office towards the beach destinations, you will find a gas station, Delta | El Coco. Note its location for when you need to fill up the fuel tank to full before returning the rental car.
Navigation Tips
Navigation from Liberia Airport is relatively simple, but preparation is still key. Here are a few things to note:
Navigation App: Use Waze for navigation, like everyone else in Costa Rica. Do NOT rely on Google Maps. It may send you on impossible shortcuts.
Marked Road Signage: Directions from Liberia to major destinations like Tamarindo, Coco, Hermosa, Rincon de la Vieja and the beaches of Papagayo Peninsula are clearly marked. For lesser known, off the beaten path locations, you may need to look deeper on Waze, or even ask around for manual directions.
Unmarked Surprises: Off the main highways, stay alert and look for potholes and unmarked speed bumps.
Adobe Support: Keep the Adobe contact handy for 24/7 roadside assistance.
Road Conditions
The main highways around Liberia, like Ruta 21 are well-maintained, two-lane paved roads. However, conditions can change dramatically once you leave primary routes.
Secondary roads to smaller beaches or inland attractions often transition to unpaved, gravel or dirt, sometimes with significant potholes or stream crossings.
❗️ DO NOT attempt river crossings with your rental car. If you do, your rental car insurance becomes void.
Always budget more time because what may look like a short distance on map can take much longer than anticipated due to road conditions and traffic.
During the rainy season months of May to November, even some of the good roads can transform to challenging ones, with washouts and mud being common.
We rented the car from Adobe at LIR in the month of May when the road conditions were fine, before the full onset of the rainy season. If you are traveling in the green season, always check recent reports before taking a route.

On your way from Adobe’s Liberia Airport office, if you want to stock up on groceries and other essentials for the road trip, you can go to this Walmart in Liberia. It’s in the opposite direction of places like Tamarindo and Playa del Coco, but you are likely to find everything you need.
However, if you are headed to Tamarindo (locally referred to as Tama) or Playas del Coco (locally referred to as Coco), you will find multiple options in or on the way to town, such as the following, along with their Google Maps location pins.

Food Break
After renting the car, if you are hungry and are looking for immediate food options, you can go to El Jardin Liberia right across the highway from Adobe Rent A Car Liberia Airport office.
However, note that the average prices here are higher than those of local sodas along the way. They do offer a buffet style serving and you will find clean restrooms here. They also have a souvenir store.
About Parking
Parking around destinations near Liberia varies widely. In developed areas like Tamarindo or Playa del Coco, you will find a mix of free street parking and paid lots. Most restaurants and attractions offer free guarded parking for customers.
In more remote locations and smaller beaches, car parking may be more informal. Sometimes it is just a cleared area with a local attendant watching over your car to deter break-ins, in exchange of a small fee. It can be a fixed price of 1000-3000 CRC or tip based.
To avoid luggage theft or car break-ins happening to you, follow these rules when parking your rental car in Costa Rica:

Returning the Car to Adobe
Tank Refill
Remember to refill the gas tank before returning the rental car to Adobe’s Liberia Airport office. As mentioned earlier, Delta | El Coco on the highway Ruta 21 is a good choice as it’s less than 4 km from the rental car office.
You will know by now that Costa Rican gas stations are full-service, meaning attendants pump the gas for you. We simply specify the amount (“lleno” means “full”) and pay with card.

Both the hotels are located close to the airport, within 10 minutes’ drive. You can avail the hotel’s free airport shuttle transfer service in case you decide to return the rental car the day before.
The Return Process
Returning our car to Adobe’s Liberia office was simple. We pulled into their lot and parked the car in the “Return” section. An Adobe staff member immediately greeted us and directed us inside the office.
I did not keep an eye in this case, but I suppose while we were inside, they performed a quick inspection of the car to check the car condition and the fuel level.
In almost no time, we were given the final receipt. There were no additional charges and the final amount matched with what we had originally signed up for.
We paid the balance 10 USD to formally close the transaction, and Adobe canceled our deposit hold on the credit card.

Airport Shuttle Return
After completing the rental car return process, Adobe’s shuttle will take you back to Liberia Airport. The shuttle runs continuously during Adobe’s business hours, so you will not have to wait for more than a few minutes.
The same as pickup from airport, the driver can assist you with the luggage loading and unloading. The shuttle will drop you off at the departures section of the airport, thus concluding your Costa Rica road trip from Liberia.
