On our first trip to Rio, we were completely blown away by the jaw-dropping views from the Sugarloaf Mountain, where the sprawling cityscape converges with verdant mountains and the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Now, staring at the Sugarloaf Mountain from the window by my work desk at our accommodation in Rio, I sit down to compile my 11 best tips to help you maximize your experience of visiting Sugarloaf Mountain, the tenth one being the best and my personal favorite.

We booked our tickets online which also allowed us to choose the hour of our visit and plan the day in advance.
Upon reaching the park entrance gate, it was a breeze for us to walk in to the designated lane for prior online bookings and follow the signs to proceed.
We just had to present the QR codes on our mobiles at different checkpoints.
There was no waiting time in our lane while we saw long queues in all the other lanes.

- From the Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar website. You need to create an account to complete the booking.
- Official tickets on GetYourGuide with the option of free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. Exchange your online voucher at site for tickets.
Book an Uber
✅ Tip #2: Book an Uber to get to the Sugarloaf entrance.
The public transportation system in Rio de Janeiro is pretty comprehensive. There are buses and combinations of metro and bus connecting to Sugarloaf entrance from different parts of the city.
But the most convenient way to get to Sugarloaf entrance is to Uber there. If you are two or more people, Uber may also work out cheaper, depending on where you are coming from.
📍 When booking Uber, put Sugar Loaf Cable Car as your destination.
🚙 Ubers are widely available in Rio de Janeiro, are safe to avail and offer comfortable rides.

If you still wish to avail other public transports, here is what you need to do:
🚌 By Bus: Get down at the Unirio stop, and then walk about 4 minutes to get to the Sugarloaf Cable Car starting point.
🚇 By Metro: Get down at Botafogo metro station and then walk for about half an hour to get to the Sugarloaf Cable Car starting point. Check walk routes here.

Why is this a visit tip, you may ask.
Isn’t the cable car the only way to access Sugarloaf?
No, my friend.
There are couple of other ways, but first, let me tell you about the cable car ride.
🚡 The journey is a two-leg cable car ride. The first ride takes you from the base next to Praia Vermelha to Urca Hill, and then the second one takes you from Urca Hill to the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain.
The magic begins with this cable car journey, where you are treated to spectacular sceneries, revealing some of the most iconic sights of Rio, like Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana Beach, Guanabara Bay, Niteroi Bridge.
🕰️ Each phase of the cable car ride takes about 3 minutes and is a smooth ride.
Sugarloaf Cable Car Hours:

On the first leg of the trip, from base to Urca Hill, as the glass-wall cabin ascended up the cable line, we saw the cityscape gradually shrinking beneath us.
As we continued to ascend on the second leg, from Urca Hill to the Sugarloaf Mountain summit, the panoramic views became even more striking, offering unparalleled views of Rio de Janeiro.
🌟 This scenic two-phase cable car journey is the most convenient way to experience the Sugarloaf Mountain.

But if you are among those who are not looking for convenience while traveling, but challenges instead, here are couple of alternative ways you can access Sugarloaf:
🥾 Hike + Cable Car: Replace the first cable car ride with a hike.
It takes about 45 minutes to hike up through the forest trails from the base to the Uruca Hill. From there, you can take the second cable car to the top of Sugarloaf.
Remember, you will still need the tickets.
🧗🏽 Hike + Climb: This is for you if you are looking to up your adventure points when traveling in Rio.
Work your way to the Sugarloaf summit by hiking through forest trails, scrambling on rocks and finally climbing a 20 meter high vertical wall!
We have not done this climb, but they say, with a guide, prior experience is not required for this adventure.

Well, for many, this may not be on their top of the list for visiting Sugarloaf Mountain. But, if you are like us and prefer to consume any and all information about the places you visit, this one is for you.
Before boarding the cable car, you will pass by areas where there are displays of relics and information, text and photo, about the history of and technology behind the cable car system of Sugarloaf.
⚙️ We read every bit of that information and got to learn how the first ever cable car lines to Sugarloaf came into being in 1912.
Make a stop at the Urca Hill
✅ Tip #5: Spend time at the Urca Hill level.
After the first cable car to Urca Hill, you do not need to rush to take the second one. Take your time to experience the offerings at Morro da Urca.
As we disembarked from the cable car at Urca Hill, the place felt like an organized tourist attraction. We saw retail stores, souvenir shops and restaurants.
But the views were still incredible.
🚁 If you fancy a helicopter ride around Sugarloaf Mountain and seeing other Rio highlights like Christ the Redeemer from unique perspectives, there is also a helipad here at Urca Hill.
Indranil and I spent several leisurely minutes hanging out at this Urca Hill level.
We soaked in the beautiful vistas from all around, got ourselves some quick bites, watched helicopters take off and land, spotted birds and animals, and then as the daylight started to turn golden, we proceeded to take the next cable line, from Urca Hill to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.

✅ Tip #6: Check out all the viewing platforms at the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain.
Once at the summit of Sugarloaf, we took the time to wander around the various viewing platforms.
Each platform is designed to give visitors a unique perspective of the surrounding areas.
🌇 Tip: If you visit Sugarloaf during sunset hour, find yourself a west facing spot.
There are some eateries at this level too, like the Clássico Sunset Club.
However, here at the summit, despite the crowds, we channeled all our focus in absorbing the magnificent Rio cityscape showered in the golden rays of the setting sun.
Watch out for wildlife
✅ Tip #7: Keep an eye out for wildlife at Urca Hill and on Sugarloaf Mountain.
Yes, you read that right. Right in the middle of a bustling city that Rio is, it is not uncommon to spot wildlife.
Sugarloaf Mountain and Urca Hill, with their lush environs, are home to a variety of native birds and small mammals.
Apart from birds in flight, the wildlife highlight from our visit was spotting a few marmosets hanging out on Urca Hill. They are small, playful and a delight to watch.
Grab some refreshments
✅ Tip #8: Refuel with bites and beverages at Sugarloaf.
When visiting Sugarloaf Mountain, you will have no dearth of options for eating and drinking.
Whether you wish to sit down with a sunset drink at a beach club, or grab some quick finger food, or get an acai bowl, there are multiple joints to choose from, at the Urca hill level as well as at the Sugarloaf summit.
Dress comfortably
✅ Tip #9: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
Rio de Janeiro is hot and humid, and at Sugarloaf Mountain, there is a bit of walking around.
Depending on how you plan your day, you are likely to spend a few hours at the site.
So, wear clothes of breathable fabric and put on comfortable footwear.
I wore a breezy summer dress and Indranil wore a comfy floral shirt with denims. For footwear, both of us chose flip-flops!
🧗🏽 If you are doing the hike and climb instead of taking the cable car up, you need to dress accordingly. For example, hiking shoes would be a must.
Use sun protection
✅ Tip #10: Apply sunscreen.
Shield yourself from the sun. Apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated.
🧴 Ocean water activities like swimming and snorkeling are likely going to be part of your Rio de Janeiro itinerary. So, please consider using reef-safe sunscreen to prevent damage to the marine environment.

✅ Tip #11: Plan your Sugarloaf visit timings strategically so that you can experience the breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro in different lights.
Here is how we timed our visit to the Sugarloaf Mountain, and we wouldn’t change anything about it:
☀️ We arrived in the afternoon and got to see the daytime scenery from Urca Hill.
🌇 As the day progressed, we made our way to the summit of the Sugarloaf Mountain, checked out the various viewing platforms there, and found ourselves a vantage spot (it does get crowded!) for watching the sunset.
✨ What followed was a spectacular sunset. As the sun descended beneath the horizon, it cast an orange hue over the striking landscape of Rio de Janeiro, enveloping everything in a radiant golden glow.
🌇 In our opinion, sunset hour is THE best time to be at the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain.
🌃 Finally, we took the last cable car down after sunset and saw the city lights of Rio de Janeiro coming to life at night.
🌦️ It can rain in Rio, particularly in the summer months of December to March. However, it doesn’t rain the whole time and you still get plenty of sunshine during the day.
