El Poblado

El Poblado is where we stayed during our first trip to Medellin. It is the most popular area for international visitors.

This upscale neighborhood offers a comfortable introduction to the city with its tree-lined streets, abundant cafes and concentration of restaurants and nightlife.

Getting Around in El Poblado

  • Walkability: Excellent within the neighborhood, though steep hills can be challenging
  • Metro access: El Poblado station is about a 15-minute walk from the main Poblado area
  • Uber/Taxis: Readily available and the easiest way to get around
  • Buses: Several routes connect through the area

Is El Poblado Safe?

El Poblado is considered the safest neighborhood in Medellin, with a visible police presence and well-lit streets.

You can comfortably walk around day and night, though standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially late at night.

Restaurants and Cafes in El Poblado

Restaurants: El Poblado offers Medellin’s most diverse dining scene, from high-end Colombian cuisine to international restaurants. We went to Mondongo’s for our first Bandeja Paisa and Mondongno and liked the experience.

Cafés: Medellin’s coffee culture shines in El Poblado, with specialty cafes on nearly every corner. We liked Pergamino coffee from some of Colombia’s best beans and Cafe 11:11 for their excellent brews and people-watching from patio.

* Pergamino has multiple locations throughout Medellin.

Hotel Recommendations for El Poblado

El Poblado’s popularity for nightlife means some areas, especially around Parque Lleras, can be noisy until late.

If you are sensitive to noise, choose accommodations a few blocks away from the main entertainment zone.

Laureles

On our recent trip to experience Christmas in Medellin, we stayed in Laureles and discovered that this neighborhood offers an authentic Colombian experience while still providing plenty of comforts.

  • Metro access: Estadio and Santa Teresita stations serve the area
  • Uber/Taxis: Readily available

Is Laureles Safe?

We felt safe in Laureles, during the day, in the evening hours, as well as when we were out late at night on a match day.

The neighborhood has a strong community feel with families and locals out enjoying the many parks and plazas. Exercise normal caution at night, particularly in quieter areas.

Things to Do in Laureles

✅ Sign up for this Medellin city tour on e-bike. It starts in Laureles. Indranil had fun on this e-bike tour.

Restaurants and Cafes in Laureles

Restaurants: Laureles offers excellent value dining with more local options than El Poblado. Yes, you will find the big restaurants, for example, there is a Mondongno’s in Laureles as well. But we secretly enjoyed discovering the smaller local eateries, such as, Calienticos Y Deliciosos Laureles.

Cafés: The coffee culture in Laureles is thriving with both traditional and modern cafes. There is a Pergamino in Laureles. We found the coffee great at Rituales Compañía de Café, however, weren’t quite impressed with the recent rebranding.

Hotel Recommendations for Laureles

Note on Noise in Laureles:

Areas closer to La 70 street can be noisy because of nightlife and traffic.

Also, in and around the stadium region, prepare to hear late night or all night fireworks on match days.

Bring earplugs if you are staying near La 70 or Estadio.

Envigado

On one of our recent trips, also our longest in Medellin for over a month, we chose to stay in Envigado, which is technically a separate municipality but effectively a southern extension of the city.

This residential area offers a glimpse into authentic Colombian suburban life with tree-lined streets, family-owned restaurants, and a relaxed pace that feels worlds away from the tourist zones.

Getting Around in Envigado

  • Walkability: Good within the neighborhood, though some areas have hills
  • Metro access: Envigado and Ayurá stations connect the area to central Medellin
  • Uber/Taxis: Readily available
  • Buses: Local routes connect throughout Envigado and to other parts of Medellin

Is Envigado Safe?

Envigado is known as one of the safest areas in greater Medellin.

For its family-oriented atmosphere and strong community presence, we found it comfortable to walk around in Envigado, during the day as well as in the evening. As always, standard precautions apply.

Things to Do in Envigado

Restaurants and Cafes in Envigado

Restaurants: Envigado offers some of the most authentic and affordable Colombian dining in the metro area. Restaurante La Gloria de Gloria is good for Colombian cuisine, and they are particularly admired for their chicharrónes. If you are in the mood for some non-Colombian cuisine, we can recommend Shawarma House.

Cafés: While less concentrated than El Poblado, Envigado has excellent cafes serving quality Colombian coffee. We loved the cozy vibe at this little cafe, Don Alirio Café de Origen, and their coffee, snacks and desserts.

Hotel Recommendations for Envigado

Note on Long Stays in Envigado:

We recommend Envigado for longer stays in Medellin, or for your subsequent visits to the city.

For your first visit and doing all tours, El Poblado and Laureles may be more convenient choices.

The main plaza and surrounding areas are well-lit and active with families and locals in the evenings. As with anywhere, be more cautious late at night.

Things to Do in Sabaneta

Restaurants and Cafés in Sabaneta
