Monteverde draws thousands of tourists to its vast expanse of forest cover, cloud forest reserves, alluring hanging bridges, thrilling zip-lines and teeming wildlife.

Once you have decided on adding this cloud forest haven to your Costa Rica vacation itinerary, it’s time to choose where to stay in Monteverde.

Plan Your Trip to Monteverde:

Factors for Deciding Where to Stay in Monteverde

When deciding where to stay in Monteverde, it is important to consider if you want to stay close to Santa Elena town or out of town. During our various trips, we have stayed in different parts of Monteverde. While the experience of Monteverde did not vary much, you may consider a couple of points while choosing an accommodation.

No matter where you stay, most of the tour operators offer transportation (free or paid) from and to the hotel in case you plan to book tours and activities. Let’s take a look at some of the deciding factors below.

In Santa Elena Town:

If you are taking a bus to Monteverde, staying in Santa Elena town is the most convenient option. This is where the bus station is. Moreover, you will be close to supermarkets, restaurants, souvenir shops, ATMs, and other amenities. It is easy to get everything done on foot.

However, please note that it gets busy during the tourist season and restaurants may have long queues. Most of the hotels here are along the street which can get noisier at night.

Outside town, closer to reserves or adventure parks:

If you are traveling in a car (owned or rented), you can plan to stay outside the town. There are many beautiful hotels to choose from, and almost all of them have private reserves or on-site trails with an abundance of wildlife.

Additionally, many properties outside town are sustainable properties working to minimize their negative impact on the environment.

The downside to staying out of town is that the accommodations are more scattered here, and amenities are not within walking distance.

You can apply all the desired filters and shortlist the ones that meet your criteria. On continued use, you will keep unlocking their Genius benefits. For long term stays, we use Airbnb. Of late, we have also started browsing Hostelworld for finding hostels.
  • Tours: When traveling to new destinations, you can plan ahead and book your activities. Check for highly rated tours on Viator and Get Your Guide.
  • Packing: From swimwear to sunscreen, hiking pants to insect repellents, buy your vacation packing essentials on Amazon.
